Birdwatching and Wildlife at Caño NegroCaño Negro Wildlife Refuge offers some of the most abundant bird watching opportunities in the world, including Anhinga, Storks, Rosette Spoonbills, Night Herons and others. It is located near the small town of Los Chiles, just 5 km (3 miles) from the Nicaraguan border. The tour begins with a 90 minute drive in through some of Costa Rica’s richest farmlands. Following a 15-minute break in Los Chiles, you’ll board a comfortable covered motor boat on the Río Frío. Frequent sightings include three types of monkeys, bats, both types of sloth, iguanas, “Jesus Christ” lizards, turtles, caimans and many species of lowland birds.
